Curious if anyone is going to be watching Earth 2100 this evening, on ABC (9 PM Eastern time! 2 hours! I sound like a commercial!) The program focuses on:

"In order to plan for the worst, we must anticipate it. In that spirit, guided by some of the world's experts, ABC News' "Earth 2100," hosted by Bob Woodruff, will journey through the next century and explore what might be our worst-case scenario.

But no one can predict the future, so how do we address the possibilities that lie ahead? Our solution is Lucy, a fictional character devised by the producers at ABC to guide us through the twists and turns of what the next 100 years could look like. It is through her eyes and experiences that we can truly imagine the experts' worst-case scenario -- and be inspired to make changes for the better."

In fact, you can view the commercial here! Planning on watching it? Or if you did watch it, what were your thoughts? Comment away!

Didn't watch the show, so I can't give comments directly about it. I did see the ads for it, though, and I have to say that based on those ads, I only got the impression that it was an extremist, doomsday-type show. I hope I'm wrong, and that it was an educational eye-opener. It is important for all people--myself included--to try to make better choices about how we treat the planet so that Earth and its inhabitants in 2100 are healthier than they are in 2009. Sadly, when shows seem gimmicky (like the ads made this one seem) or reactionary, rather than simply being honest and humble, they are more likely to lose credibility for their cause. Just my opinion.

Robin,

The show was a little doomsday-ish. I'll give ya that. And I'm not a huge fan of those types of things. BUT I thought it was very inspiring and eye opening as well, if people were willing to listen. I'll have a post on it later this week.

It did the doomsday story, but backed up a lot of it with facts/knowledgable possibilities from professionals in the field; and in the end gave ideas on how we could prevent these things from happening.

Somedays I think it would be amazing if mankind as a race would just STOP, and restructure. And work together. Can you imagine what we could accomplish for the world, for ourselves, and our future, if we all worked together and stopped focusing on the mine, mine, mine syndrome (wealth, fame, better than you attitude, etc.) We'd be unstoppable, in a good way!

Again, I have a post coming. Anyone else watch it?

Thanks for explaining the show's approach to me, Nathan. If they have an encore presentation, I'll give the show a try if I can catch it. In the meantime, I'll make sure to read your upcoming post on the show. I do hope that said post will elaborate on your comment above about how much mankind could accomplish by working together, restructuring, etc. It is a beautiful truth, that. Cheers!

P.S. My inner editor gave me a minor flogging when I realized I had used the word "reactionary" in my original comment when I actually meant "alarmist." Eep!
